Is a pardon the same as a record suspension?
Yes. Record suspension is the official term since March 13, 2012 under the Criminal Records Act. “Pardon” is the former name Canadians still use in everyday language and Google searches. Both refer to the same Parole Board of Canada process.
Why the name changed
Bill C-10 renamed pardons to record suspensions to reflect that convictions are set apart - not erased. The application process and PBC authority continued under the new name.
Which term should I use?
Search either term - employers and government forms use “record suspension.” Our guides and services cover both keywords because applicants often do not know the rename happened.
